challenge-to-Technology MAPPING

This Challenge-to-Technology mapping visualisation is based on a standard Sankey chart layout. It presents the defence-specific challenges selected - via the user-selected family of challenges (user may only select an entire Challenge family) on the left-hand side of the chart, and their relationship to the 29 initial technologies in the underlying catalogue (displayed to the right-hand side of the chart).

Once the user has selected the cognitive challenge to technology visual to view further information with, they are presented with a selector page on which the must select a single cognitive challenge family for which to view relationships with technologies with.

Challenge-To-Technology Mapping - sorting by number of input challenges

Users may modify the visualisation to reorder the view/both banks of nodes based on either the total number of links interacting with the nodes, or the sum of the weightings of links into each individual node.

Challenge-To-Technology Mapping - displaying relationships based on ‘Strength of Relationship Between Cognitive Challenge and Technology

Users may also modify the chart view to display only challenges-technology relationships that have a minimum inferred level of relationship strength. This relationship strength is based on a unit-less scale between 1 (low) and 8 (high).

Modifying the value selected on the weighting slider will automatically refresh and update the chart displayed to reflect only those challenge-technology relationships that have that level or higher of assigned weight.

Displaying relationships with weighting of 2 and above

Displaying relationships with weighting of 3 and above

Displaying relationships with weighting of 4 and above. Here there is nothing to display, so user is presented with a warning message before the chart automatically transitions back to the previous view.

Value-added information tooltips

User can interrogate individual challenge [technology] nodes to view additional information regarding the related technologies [challenges].

By selecting the ‘Challenges’ label above the bank of challenges nodes to the left-hand side of the visual, when a user interacts the mouse with any intermediate link on the chart, the chart will update to display:

- the ‘Challenges’ label in DSTL Rose Red styling

- only the challenge to which that link is attached

- all the technologies that are linked to that single challenge

- all intermediate links that exist between that single challenge and related technologies

By selecting the ‘Technologies’ label above the bank of technologies nodes to the right-hand side of the visual, when a user interacts the mouse with any intermediate link on the chart, the chart will update to display:

- the ‘Technologies’ label in DSTL Rose Red styling

- only the technology to which that link is attached

- all the challenges that are linked to that single technology

- all intermediate links that exist between that single technology and related challenges
